I’m losing faith in humanity…
A man has an affair while his wife goes through menopause
fucking a woman twenty years younger
thinking he’s a hero for staying married
A ‘Christian’ spews hate from their mouth
condemning anyone who lives differently
while loudly proclaiming God is love
A woman sits with her friends
gossiping about another
poison filling the air while she pledges her loyalty
A poet sits at their computer
stringing sentences from facts
spinning them as fiction…
I’m losing faith in myself
I’m one of those people who sees the good in humanity, but sometimes the state of the world overwhelmes me. I deliberately stay away from writing about war, politics etc, because it would crush me. In this poem, you’ll see my attention focused on the micro, on the individual lives and hurts that have me also questioning all I want to believe. May I try today, to make this world a better place, even if it’s for one person.
**Heads up, over the next little while I will post some of the ‘sad’ poems I’ve been hanging onto for too long. Now, because I don’t want you to be depressed, I’m going to alternate between pain and joy. I hope you don’t get whiplash 💜 **

Kudos for letting the sad out too Bree. We need to embrace and express the range of feelings and I can relate to being overwhelmed at the state of humanity.

Thanks Brad, I appreciate the encouragement to ‘let out the sad’ 😆
It’s a balancing act of being informed, yet not depressed.

Loved this – baring one’s soul and telling the truth even when it hurts and is ugly!!!
Yes, it is hard to believe how people proclaim to be Christians but never act that way!
I find it amazing that the Good Book says, “The LOVE of MONEY is the root of all Evil” and yet people never see it in themselves!!!
Looking forward to your “Darker” poems. No problem with whiplash here! Ha!

This piece resonates with me strongly. I’m losing faith in humanity and myself too. There are so many things I’d like to write about to – especially stuff going on in my country – but I’m not brave enough because of new laws passed that could get people jailed for nothing. Focusing on the small transgressions is also a great way to express how far we’ve fallen methinks. Great work! 🙂

Thanks, O.P., although I’m sorry to hear you’re in the same boat. It’s funny, I was listening to Tony Ann (a pianist) today, and I found his work so moving, I found a bit of faith. I’m often like that with artists, they amaze me and point me to so much beauty. I’m captivated by humankind’s capacity to create – it lights a way when I feel downcast.

Wow. Thank you so much for introducing me to Tony Ann! He’s like a combination of Einaudi and Philip Glass (two of my favourite contemporary composers although the latter can be a little abstract sometimes). Music moves me tremendously, often shaping the tone of my poems. Reading also does that. Yeah humanity is weird. We’re capable of creating masterpieces and also capable of shitty acts. But you’re right; humanity’s capacity to create lights a way forward often.

Soulful and honest poem, love both the recording as well as the additional reflection added at the end. I find so many of those thoughts you’ve written there relatable. And, do not worry about alternating sad and upbeat poems – you can write both so craftily and honestly – and this way we get to enjoy your entire writing palette 🙂

This is the state of humankind. I feel pity for the state humans are in. But if there are such people then there are good ones too. Hold onto the good, like me 😉 and stay happy always. 🙂
