What Day Is It? (with audio)

I don’t recall where I am
or what I’m doing
How did I get to this place in my life?
Why did I allow myself to float this far off track?

My inner child looks back
over a freckle-covered shoulder
She had different dreams than this
she bought into a lie she never knew existed

The imperfections of life
– the tired days
exhaustion
relentlessness –
she never dreamed of those;
she thought she would be stronger
she thought she would laugh more

It’s been a path of small compromises
and making excuses for others
and now I’m here
wherever that might be

I don’t remember the way
I don’t know where I am
What day is it again?

When I recorded this the bird outside wouldn’t shut-up, so, I left them in. You might hear them if you have a keen ear.

  1. This poem is really sad but very real. Life gets to most of us. It would be nice to be young again, our inner children leading us, giving us hope and dreams, methinks. But reality inundates and there’s nothing we can do. I can relate to this poem all the more now that I’m in my mid 30s. Really good.

    1. It is on the sad side, so I’m sorry to my readers for that 😅 But, I am glad to hear you say it was ‘very real’. Thank you kindly for sharing your thoughts. My inner child, I must write about her sometime soon as well 👌

  2. Yes! this is the way. I am off to a loooong holiday soon. I am exhausted by everything the city provides which is only stress. 😀
