26th April: My Birthday

Today is my birthday… my blogging birthday. A year ago today, I posted my first few thoughts and now we are here together. I’m surprised I made it.

Happy Birthday to all our secret thoughts!

I wish I could shower you with gifts and watch your eyes light up, but I have no presents to offer today. Instead, allow me to reminisce for a moment… I wrote a heck of a lot of poetry over the last year, did collaborations with amazing writers, ventured into poetry recording and even had a few poems officially published. I never thought I would do any of that. What I’m most surprised about is that I haven’t bailed (shut this page down) yet.

Thanks so much to you, for following me and reading my words. You have encouraged me countless times and many of you have pushed me to try new forms, styles, approaches etc and stretch myself creatively. I am incredibly grateful. I’ll try and write something magical again real soon.

Ok, I lied… I have a few little pressies for you. Let the poetry party begin! Excuse the cheesiness and just come with me for a few minutes… and maybe a few more after that

Poetry Community (possibly the cheesiest poem ever written)

Connected to you
Makes writing feel true
We read and share
Without a care
We join in heart
Though miles apart
Your creative fire
Lifts my life higher
Dear Poets, it’s true
I really love you!

Two Truths and A Lie

a) I have tattoos
b) My poet crush is John Keats
c) I feel naked if I’m not wearing an anklet

Your Prose

I feel so privileged to have stumbled my way into your world.
You draw me in and you set me free with your eloquent prose.
How do you do that so easily? Do you cast a spell on every word?
I believe you must, because I am held captive until I have examined every stroke.
You undo me with every new phrase and my emotions haemorrhage within my chest.
What greater privilege is there than to share your created world?

Two Lies and A Truth

d) I Hate Kimchi
e) My favourite flower is the Sunflower
f) I am from New Zealand

I have absolutely no idea what my writing future holds. I have no plans and I’m OK with that. What I do know is that I’ll probably keep sharing secret thoughts (both the true and imagined) until it’s no longer enjoyable for me. I’m really focusing on the joy factor right now 😊 How amazing it is to be able to create something from just a few inspired thoughts.

  3. Congrats on this anniversary! This image (wow!): “You undo me with every new phrase and my emotions haemorrhage within my chest”; and that whole poem was greaaaaaaaat. This was an effective post. Probably the best anniversary post I’ve come across just yet. All amazing things to you in the future! Sure the universe will bring many rewarding things your way. You deserve that! And hopefully more words to come!

    1. Oh thank you so Ben πŸ’œ I appreciate your thoughts on ‘Your Prose’. I think every writer everywhere wishes for more (and better) words to come, so I’ll hold onto that hope too.

      1. You’re welcome. And you’re correct. And most of the time the better words come naturally. The more we do something the better we tend to get. You’ll keep getting better and better. I have no doubt about it. πŸ’œ

  4. OMG Bree! Your words are so powerful and really reach out and touch my heart Your last paragraph was great and the last line was Amazing!! It inspired a whole poem. I will recite it later today. I shall be forever indebted to you for the seed of inspiration your words provided for my poem – The Transcript! And for all the inspiration from your words and our writing together!! Going radio silent about 4 p.m. my time.
Hope you have a great day, Dear!

  5. Happy blogging birthday! I admire the way you approach both blogging and writing. You set forth with optimism, open to learning new things and getting to know people from different walks of life. I think it’s an amazing approach and I feel that I should take a similar one and keep this blog instead of flirting with blogging like I have for so many years now. So, thanks for the inspiration.

P.S. I’ve always wanted to write beautiful poems like Keats and lyrical, moving prose like Fitzgerald!

    1. Thanks Nitin, your words are extremely kind! Believe me, I have my moments of creative despair and crushing doubt. Preserving is the key for me; feeling the feelings but not agreeing with them. It’s an ongoing process πŸ˜…
And my goodness… To be able to write like the masters 😍 Actually, I see many writers and poets on WP and IG that to me are just as talented.

      1. I think we all have those moments of creative doubt. Even the greats had their difficulties. This side of paradise by Fitzgerald (his first book) is considered to be a flawed Bildungsroman and Keats wrote some obscure stuff before he started writing his terrific work. And yes, there are many writers who are talented. Ultimately it comes down to hard work and like you said, perseverance.
